This is a creative collaboration between Beyond The Page (BTP) and WantsumArts, a community arts organisation. We work in partnership with school communities in order to achieve lasting change in relationships, communication and participation. It benefits women with child care responsibilities who have moved into the UK and are learning English as an additional language. Becoming part of the project empowers women to build their linguistic skills, cultural understanding and confidence, leading to more active involvement in school life. It also benefits other parents and staff within the whole school who learn from multilingual women about their lives, skills and interests, and develop more effective means of communication and engagement.
We combine teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) with Natural Voice techniques including singing, plus drama and other creative activities. We build a curriculum from current issues and language needs, identify linguistic and cultural difficulties and together practise strategies to overcome them. It's friendly, fun and a safe place to explore and learn.
